Accessible parking
spaces are required at all public facilities to ensure that people with
disabilities are able to access businesses and services within our community in
a safe and effective manner. These
parking spaces are wider than a normal space to accommodate a vehicle as well
as a wheelchair. Please have
consideration and leave these spaces open for those individuals who need
them.
The fine for
parking in a signed accessible parking space is $350.00 and is proactively enforced
Many of our small
hamlets are popular destinations during the fall season and the winding Forks
of the Credit Road and surrounding area becomes very busy. Due to the increased
traffic in the area, the Town of Caledon implements a traffic management plan
that enables visitors and residents to safely travel ours roads. Enforcement presence is increased to ensure
the free movement of traffic. There are very few parking areas such as the
Forks of the Credit Road and Baseline road near the area known as the “bad
lands” and we suggest you to utilize either the Belfountain Conservation Area
or Forks of the Credit Provincial Park for parking.
Parking within 3
metres of a fire hydrant is not permitted.
The distance is measured from the curb and 3 metres each way.
Fire routes are
established to ensure that firefighters have a clear and unobstructed access to
a building in the event of a fire. It
also allows people to exit a building quickly without being blocked by
vehicles. They are located in most
plazas, commercial buildings, and schools. The stopping or parking of a vehicle
whether the driver is in the vehicle or not is not permitted and is strictly
enforced. The only exception to this
rule is if you are actively engaged in dropping or picking up a passenger or
goods. It does not include waiting for
a passenger such as a child at school or someone shopping.
In order that
Public Works can efficiently clear snow from roads, residents are reminded that
parking is not permitted on streets during a winter storm. Overnight parking considerations cannot be
obtained during this time.
Sidewalks need to
be kept free of obstructions so that residents can safely walk without having
to travel on the roadway. Wheel Chairs
and seniors who have difficulty negotiating curbs cannot maunder around vehicles
blocking the sidewalk. In the winter
time sidewalk plows have limited space to manoeuvre around cars and in many
cases cannot clear the sidewalk.
Town of Caledon Traffic By-law prohibits overnight parking on the street
however consideration may be given where a resident is not able to accommodate
cars in their driveway because of overnight guests or repairs being done to a
driveway.

Respect
posted speed limits, traffic signs and parking restrictions in school areas.
Fines may be up to $5,000!
The streets which surround a school
are a hub of activity. In addition to the daily community traffic, school
buses arrive twice each day – in the morning to drop children off and again to
pick them up in the afternoon. Many children also walk to school or ride their
bikes, and in some cases they do not pay attention to the vehicular dangers
that surround them.
For these reasons, the streets
surrounding our schools in the Town of Caledon are designated as “No Stopping”
zones. This allows a clear,
unobstructed view for motorists who need to be alert to all pedestrian traffic
in this area.
Parents and guardians who choose to
bring their children to school by car are not exempt from these rules, even in
adverse weather conditions. Parking or stopping for even a minute in a “No
Stopping” zone endangers the lives of other children – this is a serious
offence and will be strictly enforced by the Town’s parking control officers.
The Town of Caledon wants to ensure
the children of our community can safely get to and from school. Achieving our
children’s safety through compliance is our mission. Please don’t let
compliance through enforcement be our only alternative.
|
If you must drive your child to school, consider the following:
Pre-arrange where you will drop off and pickup your
child. Consider a nearby parking lot or area away from the school that is
not within the restricted parking zone
Some school properties feature “kiss and ride” areas –
please use if provided
Be courteous to other children and their
parents/guardians. Aggressive, hurried driving does not belong here
Carpool with other parents to reduce traffic flow –
save time and fuel too
Purchase weather-appropriate clothing and encourage
your children to walk to school, even in inclement weather
Be patient and drive with caution at all times.
Children are not good judges of a vehicle’s speed. Young pedestrians or
cyclists can be unpredictable, merging off the sidewalk onto the road at any
time
Residents
are reminded that when clearing snow from your driveway that you do not
deposit your excess snow on the roadway.
This accumulation of snow causes obstructions and may result in a
vehicle loosing control. Please
clear your snow onto your own property and not into ditches or the road
allowance.
Unless otherwise
posted, a vehicle may park on a public road for a maximum of 3 hours. Most roads are posted as you enter the
municipality. This restriction is
generally enforced on a complaint basis.
